Error: Unable to select one of the provided GLCapabilities

We recently had some trouble with JOGL on Linux. The most complete description (including errorlog) can be found here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/jhelioviewer/+bug/596030

The basic question about this is: Should we simply catch that exception, or is this something that needs to be fixed in the JOGL libraries?
