So it's not related to the AWT clear background thingy of a Canvas, good.
This is proven by your NV test as well, right.

I use
GL_RENDERER = ATI Radeon HD 5800 Series
GL_VERSION = 3.2.9756 Compatibility Profile Context
on linux 64bit here, no flickering.
The gears demo uses:
gl.setSwapInterval(1);
which works here (VSync 1), but I have noticed that
the drivers behave differently in overwriting the default setting.
IE I had to set (fglrx 3.2.9756) VSync: 'Off, unless application specifies',
otherwise I couldn't turn it on or off.
Don't know the windows driver settings, sorry.
