Java2D/OpenGL pipeline?

What's the status and future plans for the JOGL Java2D/OpenGL pipeline?  Will it ever actually work?  I have never been able to run any of the demos that use it.

status: unchanged since 1.1.1/untested

its fairly low prio for us since its by far the slowest and most restricted way to render something with OpenGL. (see FAQ) The other uncertainly is: we don't know if someone "on the other side" still works on the Swing/J2D acceleration parts of the JDK.

The pipeline worked OK in past on windows + latest HW + drivers. So in an known environment it may be still usable.
