Ardor3D uses a separate engine in order to use a more simple version (compared to the desktop one) with specific optimizations for Android. I agree with you but I know that Android does not use a real JVM, I would feel better with Java SE For Embedded but without scary licensing.
I don't know when the implementation of the NEWT Ardor3D canvas will be ready but I will try to commit my source code Friday evening in the worst case.
