AWT full screen mode is broken under GNU Linux with some window managers and it seems broken under Mac OS X too. Which version of Java do you use? I advise you to use NEWT instead of AWT. If you don't want to waste some time, try Angeles demo, press f, it will switch to full screen. If it works, it means that my suggestion is worth a try. Good luck.
