Thanks, I was not aware that this was possible directly in JOGL (again we switched to 2.0 just 2 weeks ago, and I don't know if it was already possible in 1.1.1).
I really think that you are right and that the quality and speed of the rendering would be greatly increased.

Maybe you could have a look at JOGL based Java2D implementation, I put the link into the user guide. In my humble opinion, it would allow you to stay away from GLJPanel and to draw all Java widgets faster.
