I just tested on my Macbook Pro late 2011 (AMD Radeon) OS X 10.9.1 (13B42), JVM 1.7.0_40. Your code ran fine.
 
I have successfully used the same type of NEWT setup in my hobby-project for the last year so it ought to work. I'll give it a spin on a the 1.7.0_u45 JDK (just haven't gotten around to updating).
