You're welcome. You should consider Sven's suggestion too because there is a small difference with my case, I was getting the same exception immediately whereas you get the same exception when more than one GLCanvas is created.
What is wrong with the applet? You can use the Java Web Start version, have you looked at this page in the top left corner, "JOGL Version Information"?
