I used all the latest versions of various platform software with the stable releases of Java3D and jogamp-fat.jar as I previously described.
Windows 10 in real mode with OracleJDK 9 - WORKS
MacOS in VirtualBox with OracleJDK 9 - FAILS
Kubuntu 16 in VMware with OpenJRE 8 - WORKS
Kubuntu 17 in VMware with OpenJDK 9 - FAILS
*NEW*
Kubuntu 16 in real mode with OpenJDK 9 - WORKS
and it does not even require any special command. The graphics card is NVIDIA GTX970.
