Firefox OS and JogAmp support

Hi

Maybe Xerxes might give me some information about that. I have found no way to install Java with Gonk and Gaia under Firefox OS. Is there a way to do that? Firefox OS seems to support only Javascript based web applications and some people at Mozilla use the term "bloated" to speak about Java. It is not very promising.

Just read about Firefox OS .. looks like they love to follow Google's Chrome
'political' direction alot. Personally I don't really like all those attempts
to remove freedom - even on those pure consumer platforms.

What I have read is they just support javascript, no native code etc.

Must be some very low maintenance goal for those tablets/PC,
reviving the thin client architecture .. this time w/ more powerful CPU/GPU.

Well, if they want to disable one _proven_ platform independent application
layer to be more 'slim' .. surely their choice.
But considering Java less bloated than one of today's browsers w/ all the
build-in plugins .. that's almost fun to hear.

Maybe it's also political/legal driver .. since it's not yet clear whether
it's legal to install 'a' 'Java' runtime on those 'non desktop' platforms.
Even though Oracle just failed to make their case about (c) an API
the word is not yet our whether 'we' can install OpenJDK (or similar) on
mobile devices.

Until now .. it seems that only Android's Dalvik VM got their pass,
so maybe the discussion should be more about _which_ Java like platform
can we install on today's mobile machines.

I agree with you. Actually, the problem is almost the same with Tizen. They have a strange definition of the Open Web. It is rather the Open Web© (Mozilla Foundation™).

Lol I said to a French engineer that their sales might be slim too.

They seem to refuse the install of plugins and/or extensions whereas it could be an option to allow the use of Java without forcing the Mozilla Foundation to take any legal risk.

Anyway, Firefox OS will probably be a failure as it pretends to simplify the life of developers whereas the ecosystem around HTML5/Javascript/CSS is not mature enough to replace current mature application platforms.

Edit.: If Replicant supported more smartphones, it would be really interesting.

That's here:
http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.dev.b2g/browse_thread/thread/fe2b44dee98274f7#

I don't think we will ship with *any* plugins
and will not offer any way for plugins to be installed into the OS.
The most laughing stuff is this one:
Anything that is in a plugin is not "the Open Web", as a plugin is a
proprietary backbox inside the web page.

To my knowledge it is possible to run the IcedTea-web OpenJDK browser plugin inside Fennec v12 the FireFox browser for Nokia N9, this mobile FireFox browser support all standard plugins.

FireFox-OS is based on the same Gecko engine as used inside Fennec so there should be an identical NPAPI plugin framework present.
I have no access to any system running FireFox-OS so i can not check yet.

Is it worth a try? Do I have a vanishingly small chance of running Java on it?

Right now Native apps are forbidden by Design. Firefox OS only support html 5 applications.

So no Java or JogAmp on the device unless you root it.

I ran some checks using the Firefox OS simulator.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/firefox-os-simulator/

When you reach a page using java applets, you only gets promted "a plugin is required to view this content" but there is no options to install any plugin.

It looks like Firefox OS have indeed killed the option to install plugins by disabling the whole plugin framework.

I'm fed up with Mozilla's behaviour. I wish Firefox OS to be a big failure!
